All right you up and coming guitar gods, you have some big dreams and visions of whaling on some super duper licks in front of packed house screaming your name.I too, had these thoughts when I was young boy learning guitar. But we all know it takes talent, hard work and lots of practicing to be that guitar hero. That’s where I want to come in and help you with your journey in the guitar music world.

My name is Timothy B Miller and I have been playing guitar for 37 years now and  I teach guitar full time.  I just want say a few things for you beginners trying to learn guitar and wanting to learn easy guitar songs.  Let’s just pretend like you are going to be taking lessons from me as a complete beginner.

Here we go, first thing we need to learn is the parts of the acoustic guitar.  Starting from the top you have the headstock, on the head stock is the tuning pegs or other names are tuners or machine heads. Going down we have the nut where the headstock meets the neck of the guitar.

On the top of the neck you will see many squares and they are called frets and most common guitars guitar partshave 22 to 24 frets. Top of the neck is called the fretboard or fingerboard. The 12th fret is the octave it’s like the nut but an octave higher you can identity this by two dots on the fretboard.

As we move down you’ll see an open hole in the middle of the guitar which is called the sound hole. Below the sound hole is a pick guard or scratch guard to protect the body. Last but not least is the bridge where the strings start that go over the saddle. That is the parts in a nutshell get them memorized right away.

Great, now lets go to strings.  Acoustic guitars have six strings. Let’s begin with the string farthest from your face that is the high e string and also known as the 1st string. The next one up towards your face is the 2nd string the b after that is the G string 3rd , on up 4th string D, next one 5th string A, and the closest to your face is the 6th string low E.

Now you have to remember all of these as soon as possible. One of the ways I teach my students is doing a word play with the open strings starting form the low E to high e.

Here’s two pick one and remember it:

Eat-Apples-Daily-Good-Boys-Eat

or my students favorite…

Eddie-Ate-Dynamite-Good-Bye-Eddie

Now you know all your parts and open strings that is first thing we have to learn. If you are right handed it is the strum hand and the left is the fret hand.Keep your fingers nails clipped on your fret hand it will help. On the fret hand each finger has it name the thumb is T the index is 1st, the middle is 2nd, the ring is 3rd and the pinky is the 4th finger you will need to know this when you looking at chord diagrams.

Ok the next thing you want to do is learn the how to tune the guitar there is nothing worse then a out of tune guitar people will be running out the room.  You have to learn this and you will because you do it every time before you play. The guitar has to be in tuned before you even start playing and train your ear when the string is out of tune. I have a YouTube video that will help you with this I teach the manual way and with an electronic tuner, which you will need to get.

[See Video Below]

It takes time and practice to tune a guitar. The next thing is learning your chords, keys and strumming patterns. Learning this helps you play some easy guitar songs for beginners. A good key to start with is the key of C. The key is known as the home base sound in the song. In the key of C being the first chord also known as the root chord.

The other chords that go well with C is  F and G7. So you want to play C chord for 1 bar/measure in 4/4 time that just means strum the chord 4 times with quarter note strumming 1-2-3-4 straight down strumming that is the way you should start out. If you do two bars strum 8 times if you do three bars do 12 strums keep it in fours.

Then do your F and G7 the same way and always come back to your root chord in this case C. Here is a web page that I put together to help you with your chords and how they look in case you don’t know how to fret your basic chords. Go Here: http://www.howtoplayyourguitar.com/BasicGuitarChords.htm

Now after you get some of these chords down and you’re switching more smoothly you then are ready for easy guitar songs. See my other video below to learn an easy guitar song.  Eventually you will be playing with confidence,  and remember to believe in yourself and practice. My best students are the ones that practice the most, it doesn’t matter your age it always comes down to wanting to learn and feeling the joy of guitar.

I wish you the very best with your guitar goals!

Just downloaded your tips book for beginners, I especially like the acronyms you propose for learning the notes in the major keys, good way to remember them!

Timothy – Great overview for newbies like me. The videos really make this useable and fun. Afterall if it isn’t fun then learning is going to cease pretty quickly.
