Writing Good Song Lyrics

Posted by admin | Songwriting | Saturday 31 January 2009 6:42 pm

Writing a song is something that will take time regardless of your experience and expertise. There are many things to consider when you write songs and this is by no means an exhaustive list... we all continue to learn and improve throughout our lives.

Ideas to assist in improving your lyric writing at a glance -

* Research

* Brainstorm your song topic (consider more than the obvious)

* Song structure

* Be prepared to capture ideas whenever and wherever (note pad or voice recorder)

* Avoiding writers block (experience new things to stimulate thought)

* Engage your audience

* Seek the honest opinions of others

* Improve your skills (writing workshops, forums and discussion groups)

* Leave the lyrics for some time so you can review them later when they are 'fresh' to you

First it's important to research the genre of song you are writing. Consider how the songs are written, what is being said and how it is being put forward. Are there keywords used commonly? What is common between all these quality songs? Try and apply this knowledge when you begin writing your song.

Songs must be carefully constructed. It's very useful to consider at depth your song topic. List keywords and think about more than physical attributes. Emotions and feelings are also vitally related to the topic you are writing about. The more words you can list and the more brainstorming you do, the better the end product is likely to become.

Another aspect of song writing that should always be considered is the general structure of the lyrics. Song lyrics often include verse, chorus and bridge. The chorus is most often repeated throughout the song while the bridge (a section in the song that is different from the verse and chorus) breaks up the monotony of the song, giving the listener a break from the 'normal'.

It is always wise to be prepared to capture ideas whenever you get them. You may be jogging and suddenly BAM, the idea hits you, so it's always essential to have a means to record your song ideas. A notepad and pencil will work well, although a voice recorder (perhaps a cheap MP3 player) for many is an easier way to take notes.

Then of course, there are the inevitable times where ideas don't come to you freely. Many of us have experienced the frustration of 'writer's block'. New experiences often stimulate new ideas and vigor for writing. So get out there and play a sport you've never played, visit a new place or just do something out of the ordinary and see what happens!

Any good song lyrics must engage the audience, so think about how you believe the audience will react when hearing the lyrics. Ask friends and other professionals what they feel and think about when they read / hear the lyrics. The more input others have the more likely you are to have the desired effect when writing.

Consider double meanings when you write and be sure to avoid cliches and tacky over used lines and phrases. The more unique and interesting your wording the better.

If it's unusual it's likely to capture attention, so be original but ensure that it suits your intended audience.

Like any skill, writing can be improved by learning more about it. Attend writing workshops, join appropriate writing forums and learn from discussion groups. It's amazing what you can find out and then apply to your writing! Asking questions of others is fine, but sometimes you may not have even known the question was out there in the first place, so the learning becomes even more valuable and may never have taken place if you had been involved in the activities just mentioned in this paragraph.

MOST IMPORTANTLY ensure you work on it and be very thoughtful about how things are worded. Every word counts, so don't just accept it, improve it. Use a thesaurus to widen your vocabulary and refine the message you are communicating with your audience.

Once you are happy with your song and you have sought feedback it's time to look at the overall message you are giving to the listeners. Compare your song lyrics to those in a similar genre. Are they comparable? Are they interesting? Do they make you want to listen? Are your song lyrics giving out the message you intended? Seek opinions other than your own and be open to their feedback both good and bad. It's hard to hear that your songs isn't as good as you think it is, but hey, that's life and it's better to find out now and refine it or just start again than to feel like an idiot later when telling others about this 'great song' that obviously is pathetic!

After all this it's time to take a break from what you've written. Leave it for a few weeks. Try not to think about it. Seeing it 'fresh' will let you make a better judgment on its quality. There have been many times when people have thought they have a hit and leave it for a few weeks only to find that their song is NOT what they thought it was! Give it time...

If you consider what's been mentioned above you are much more likely to produce top quality song lyrics. As with anything of a high quality it takes time and practice but the more you do the better you'll get!!!

Learn The Guitar

Posted by admin | Learning The Guitar | Saturday 31 January 2009 6:41 pm

Learning the basics of the guitar is really easy - why not try it today?

The Guitar is a really interesting instrument to learn. In my opinion it is one of the only instruments that you can learn to the point of being able to strum a simple tune - within a couple of weeks or less. This makes the guitar so appealing to people. They pick up the guitar, get shown a few chords and straightaway music can be heard. With most other instruments this is not the case and takes months of work before you can start to hear music.

Learning the guitar is also different to most other instruments in the fact that you do not need to learn how to read music. Written music notation is like another language and it takes time to learn. With most other instruments you learn to read music notation at the same time as you learn your chosen instrument. This means you have two things to concentrate on meaning the time taken to get anywhere is doubled at the very least. acoustic guitar, how to play guitar

The way you can learn the guitar without the need for music notation is thanks to the nice layout of the strings and frets. This is easily transposed onto paper in the form of boxes. The box is split vertically by 6 lines representing the 6 strings. Horizontal lines represent the frets and dots on these boxes represent where to put your fingers. These are called chord charts or chord boxes and you need no knowledge of the guitar at all to play these.

Of course, your fingers will, at first, be reluctant to move exactly where you tell them, but given a bit of practice your fingers will start to remember these chords shapes very quickly.

The second method is guitar tab, which is represented by 6 horizontal lines. It looks a little like standard music notation but rather than notes, numbers appear on any of the 6 strings. The 6 lines represent the 6 strings and the numbers represent which fret to put your finger on. Once again, you need no knowledge of the guitar to understand this and subsequently anyone can pick it up immediately.

Guitar tab is everywhere. Being it is so simple and basic there are thousands of resources on the internet that tabs can be viewed online - of course, there is no guarantees they are correct and often are littered with mistakes from the people writing them out. Having said that, it can be a really good guide of how to play a song - with no knowledge of the guitar.

Guitar tab books are readily available and it is easy to increase your knowledge of the guitar with guitar theory books, your favorite band's album songbook and much more.

The interesting thing is that I believe the guitar then becomes one of the most complicated instruments to master. On most instruments you can play a single note in one place only. On the guitar you can play a single note in several places. This can add confusion. This also applies to chords as well - a single chord can be voiced in many ways and in many different locations on the guitar.

Either way, the guitar is a great hobby, and its simplicity in learning your favorite songs to sing along provides hours of entertainment and enjoyment.

Beginner Guitar and Guitar Tabs

Posted by admin | Guitar Tab | Friday 30 January 2009 6:41 pm

Learning To Play The Guitar is Not Hard, Learn How To Read Guitar Tabs
and You Are On Your Way!

I started playing guitar when I 9 years old it wasn't by choice it was because my
Grandmotherwanted to hear song from her childhood. My teacher was an older
gentleman that didn't live farfrom us who knew all the songs that my Grandmother
wanted me to learn.

beginner guitar tabsHis lessons where straight and to the point, place your fingers here
and strumthis way or placeyour finger here and pick this string.
I would master the techniques and magic!
The song would come out.
As I got older my repertoire was limited to the
songs I had learned with my
Grandmothers neighbor so I lost interest.

As I got older I started to gain interest again but because my
experience
with a "Guitar Teacher" had not been pleasant I decided I go at it by myself.
I started looking at websites and exploring "Tabs" WOW, what a great discovery!
I could actually play anything I wanted as long as I understood this new
language and practiced. As with athletes muscle memory is very important,

the more you practice the better you get,
the quicker your brain, hands and finger work together.

Tabs are somewhat of guitar by numbers system, the numbers on the chart display
whatstring you should be on and what fret on the guitar you should press that string on.

At first when you see them displayed for songs and run next to each other they can
seem confusing but if you take one by one and isolate them it starts making sense.

Here is an example of an A Chord

A Chord=002220
Guitar Tab

|E____|__0__|_____ String Open Position you do not press down on the string
|B____|__0__|_____ String Open Position you do not press down on the string
|G____|__2__|_____ String Press down on the G string on the second fret
|D____|__2__|_____ String Press down on the G string on the second fret
|A____|__2__|_____ String Press down on the G string on the second fret
|E____|__0__|_____ String Open Position you do not press down on the string

As you can see in this example I have detailed the string and finger positions.
There are a couple of ways you will find a Tab, in a chart or grid formation or in a
numerical sequence.

The example above the chart or grid "A Chord=002220" is the numerical sequence
and it details the same information as the grid. If you are a visual person you will
probably prefer the chart or grid, both methods work well and give the same info.

The great thing about Tabs, which by the way its short "Tablature" is that if you go toyour nearest music store and search for song books from your favorite band or artist youwill find song books with Tabs. This means that you will never find yourself short ofmaterial to learn.

I for one have been very happy since my discover of Tabs, I can play anything I want and Ihave advanced from the instructions of "place your finger here". I'm not a guitar virtuoso butI enjoy my time with my music and I razzle dazzle people with my repertoire now!

Then there are chances that you might be looking out for a good teacher who would be willing to teach you at your residence or theirs. Bguitar teacher, guitar lessonsut how would you know whether you are able to get a good professional performer or not. Guitar is a musical instrument that's widely used in western music because of its adaptability and versatility.

Sound is produced in a guitar by striking the strings with your fingers and then this suddenly re-bounces allowing the strings to continue vibration at resonant frequency. The transmitted vibration that passes causes music, which is later amplified.

A guitarist enjoys his or her greatest thrill when they sit and play it. Music plays in their thought and soul before they move their fingers on the strings. Music then becomes their craze not because they have to earn their bread but because that's what they have learned. Learning guitar notes is not as tough as it's usually presumed it's all about learning the chord pattern. Firstly you have to understand the notes to play guitar efficiently.

Notes are generally named after the alphabets and the musical alphabets are much shorter than the usual English alphabet. These notes generally start from E and ends in the alphabet E. Once you get a firm hold on the chords then you can play all the six strings more rhythmically.

Many try to learn it to ease their stress and some learn it because of their passion towards it. If you wish to learn on your own then you can get many books that can help you or you can seek help from DVD's that's easily available in the market. Beginner Guitar Chords For Rock Songs

Posted by admin | Easy Guitar Songs | Friday 30 January 2009 6:39 pm

All beginner guitarists who want to play rock songs are itching to get started playing chords right away. So let us get some insight into the process of learning beginner guitar chords for rock songs. Naturally you can apply the basic ideas you find in this article to any genre, but the techniques for playing chords are mostly for rock guitarists.

The best way to introduce you to guitar chords is to list some easy rock songs and the chords that you need to learn in order to play them. As guitar chords and tabs are easy to find on the internet, I will leave it to you to do a search for the songs you decide to play. rock guitar songs, rock chords

Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream - A C G D F

Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones - A D E B

Pink Houses by John Cougar - G C F D

Wild Thing - A D E

La Bamba - C F G

As Tears Go By - G A C D

Okay, that should be enough to get any beginner guitar player started. If you do not like the idea of playing the songs that I have listed, then just do a web search for easy rock songs. The songs listed above have these chords in common: C D E F G A B. So you have the seven major chords as your basic chords for rock songs. All of these chords can be played at the first position but in the F chord you have no alternative to playing a bar chord. Or do you?

This is the F chord as a bar chord:

e--1----------------------------

B--1----------------------------

G--2----------------------------

D--3----------------------------

A--3----------------------------

E--1----------------------------

You can play the F chord without the bar this way:

e--X----------------------------

B--1----------------------------

G--2----------------------------

D--3----------------------------

A--3----------------------------

E--X----------------------------

Simply place your left hand fingers to make the bar chord, then lift the first finger and place it at the first fret on the second string. The first and sixth strings are not played. If you move this chord up to the third fret you will have a G chord and at the fifth fret, the A chord. Any barre chord can be fingered this way, and some guitarists use these "internal" chords all the time. You use four fingers to play four string chords.

Of course, most guitarists will tell you that you should learn to play the bar chord fingering, and I agree with them. It takes a few weeks to begin to play the bar chords effectively and a few months before you are playing them with no problems, but once that is done, you are set up for a lifetime of guitar playing. The four string chords are just a way of enabling you to play more songs without too much delay.

Another way of moving chords up and down the guitar neck is by the use of power chords. Power chord is the name rock guitarists have given to a two note chord containing the root note of the chord and the note a fifth above the root. Common practice has become to play the root note an octave above, for example to play a power chord instead of E major you would play the notes E and B.

e--0----------------------------

B--0----------------------------

G--x----------------------------

D--2----------------------------

A--2----------------------------

E--0----------------------------

In the above example if you play with a pick you just damp the G string with a left hand finger and strum all the strings. Or you might prefer the effect when you do not play the top E string so that the E B E B ring out on the lower strings.
