The first thing to do is research some of the songs of your favorite guitarists. It's much easier to learn something you want to play, because it's easier to stay motivated while you're learning.

Some examples of bands, groups, and musicians who have many easy to play acoustic guitar songs are:

• Wonderwall by Oasis (and several other songs by Oasis).
• Coldplay (some of their older songs, and a few new ones like Viva La Vida).
• The Beatles (almost anything by the Beatles is easy to learn, although some songs are better for an intermediate player).
• Bob Dylan (popular songs like Knocking on Heavens Door and Mr Tambourine Man).
• Green Day (Time of Your Life - Good Riddance is a good one to start with).

You can also try to learn a particular style of acoustic guitar playing. Some of the easier to play forms of music are acoustic rock, blues and country. It's much easier to learn these styles compared to advanced fingerstyle techniques.

If any of these artists of styles of music appeal to you as a beginning guitarist, then you should now have plenty of material to work with.

But if these songs and styles don't suit you, then its better to pick some of your favorite musicians music and find their simpler songs.

The best way to introduce you to guitar chords is to list some easy rock songs and the chords that you need to learn in order to play them. As guitar chords and tabs are easy to find on the internet, I will leave it to you to do a search for the songs you decide to play.

Okay, that should be enough to get any beginner guitar player started. If you do not like the idea of playing the songs that I have listed, then just do a web search for easy rock songs. The songs listed above have these chords in common: C D E F G A B. So you have the seven major chords as your basic chords for rock songs. All of these chords can be played at the first position but in the F chord you have no alternative to playing a bar chord. Or do you?

This is the F chord as a bar chord:

You can play the F chord without the bar this way:

Simply place your left hand fingers to make the bar chord, then lift the first finger and place it at the first fret on the second string. The first and sixth strings are not played. If you move this chord up to the third fret you will have a G chord and at the fifth fret, the A chord. Any barre chord can be fingered this way, and some guitarists use these "internal" chords all the time. You use four fingers to play four string chords.

Of course, most guitarists will tell you that you should learn to play the bar chord fingering, and I agree with them. It takes a few weeks to begin to play the bar chords effectively and a few months before you are playing them with no problems, but once that is done, you are set up for a lifetime of guitar playing. The four string chords are just a way of enabling you to play more songs without too much delay.

Another way of moving chords up and down the guitar neck is by the use of power chords. Power chord is the name rock guitarists have given to a two note chord containing the root note of the chord and the note a fifth above the root. Common practice has become to play the root note an octave above, for example to play a power chord instead of E major you would play the notes E and B.

In the above example if you play with a pick you just damp the G string with a left hand finger and strum all the strings. Or you might prefer the effect when you do not play the top E string so that the E B E B ring out on the lower strings.

This will allow you to play real songs faster without going through a lot of headaches. It also sets the foundation for learning music that is more complicated.

While many new guitarists are tempted to jump right in and try playing their favorites, unless you have a great talent for playing by ear, this can be more discouraging than encouraging. Better still borrow one from a friend while you get started then you can invest in a better guitar once you know that your guitar playing isn't a new year resolution fad. The rock and roll magazine, Rolling Stone has a list of the top five hundred songs of all time which has The Beatles occupying twenty-three spots. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is at number one-hundred-and-thirty-five, just below "In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett and just above "Your Song" by Elton John.

The song appeared on the album, "The Beatles", otherwise known as "the white album" because of its stark white packaging. This album was quite experimental with The Beatles writing songs in a number of genres. The Beatles were pioneers of the nonsensical lyrics school of song writing and some of the songs on the album give the impression that they were written in five minutes with more attention given to the arranging than the composition, and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" does follow a very simple formula in which the composer's attention is drawn to a thought or an object and he comments on it, finishing his statement with "while my guitar gently weeps".

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was recorded on September 6, 1968. The guitar solo on the song has the sound that many people associated with The Beatles' lead guitarist, George Harrison but it was actually played by Eric Clapton with George playing rhythm guitar and Ringo Starr on drums.

Paul McCartney played piano on the session and dubbed bass guitar onto the track later. Eric Clapton was invited by George to play the guitar on the track and was initially worried about being an outsider playing on a Beatles song, but the presence of a musician of Eric Clapton's status actually helped dissipate tension between the members of The Beatles. The only issue was that Clapton received no credit on the album cover because of his contract with another record company.

The song has been recorded quite a few times, notably by the late Canadian blues player, Jeff Healy and a solo ukelele version by Jake Shimabukuro.

I used to hang out with a lot of experienced guitarists asking them about the most fundamental thing to learn as a guitar beginner. Most of the answers I got from them are the "guitar scales'. However, you need a lot of practice to learn the guitar scales well.

You can learn it with A minor pentatonic scale such as A - C - D - E - G, to make your learning process as simple as possible. You will handle the guitar scale easier if you learn them from the basic.

Scales are the basis for music. In order to play music you will need to understand and know key scales. Learn scales through practice. Here are some tips about lessons.

First you should choose a style of music. It helps to play a style of music that you enjoy. Once you decide what style of music, then you need to move on to learning the scale. For example: the minor pentatonic scale covers most power chords used in rock, blues, and heavy metal. Just go over the scales and choose which one suits your interests. Some scales are better than other scales. Find a scale that works well for the type of music you are interested in.

To understand and play scales well, understand the keynote. The Keynote is the major note in the scale. For example, A is the keynote in the A minor pentatonic scale. Everything about a scale depends on the keynote. Many players just play around and fly up and down the scale. That doesn't do anything for your practicing. Focus on the keynote while you play scales.

To really practice a scale, you will want to have background music playing in the key that you are playing in. The background recording should be simple. If you record a simple 10 minutes of backing acoustic guitar, it will give you time to play around with the scale and explore. You want to be able to play around without having to restart the background music.

The last thing you need to do is to learn all of the keys. You want to be able to play your scales in all of the musical keys. It is important to learn all the musical keys because singers use all different keys. You want to be able to play guitar and accompany any singer. Every musical key is different.

Learning these scales and keys will help you create a foundation for your guitar learning. It will make sure that you can play music with anyone.

If you like ballads, you can learn to play acoustic guitar on your own, although it is highly recommended to ask for tips from people who have been playing for a long time; that is if you are really convinced to go the acoustic route. This type of guitar may be cheaper, but a slightly higher end one should be considered if you want it to pay off in the long run. The low-priced ones may be easy on the pocket, but you can't expect the sound it will be producing to be the best and many lower end acoustics are difficult to play. There are guitar lessons for beginners available over the internet, and they come in the form of tutorial web sites, videos or eBooks. These materials are affordable and easy to use, and make a great substitute for the one-on-one session with a guitar instructor. They are also much less expensive in the long run as lessons from instructors can get very costly.

Remember, the best way to learn the guitar is by concentrating and having a positive attitude towards the learning process.

Who Invented the Electric Guitar?

During the 1920's and 1930's many individuals and companies were experimenting with designs that would enable them to make guitars louder. With bands getting larger, and audiences getting louder, it was important to be able to hear the actual, individual instruments.

In 1924, Lloyd Loar of the Gibson Guitar Company was developing a means (an electric pickup) to pass the vibrations of the strings through a bridge to a magnet and coil, whereupon they were passed as electrical signals to an amplification device. By 1928 "electric guitars" were officially being marketed and sold to the public.

However, the problem with this was that in transferring the vibrations to a medium before being sent to an amplifier, the signal was too weak. So a more direct method had to be developed. The first to do this, and get the patent for it, was George Beauchamp, along with Adolph Rickenbacker and his company.

The guitar was known both as "The Pancake Guitar" and as "The Frying Pan" because of its appearance and because it was played flat in the musician's lap. Available from 1931 on, the guitar was made out of cast aluminum and steel.

Notable Early Achievements Following the Invention of the Electric Guitar

Before this, there were other models being experimented with by many other people. Les Paul, for instance, was working with attaching microphones to guitars. By the 1940s Les Paul would invent something much more successful, which was the solid wood body guitar.

It was designated as "The Log", because it was essentially just one piece of wood attached to a neck with pickups and hardware attached. Gibson later sold a solid body electric guitar endorsed by Les Paul starting in 1950 which could be mass produced.

It was Leo Fender in the late 1940s that developed the first commercially successful, solid body electric guitar. With a single magnetic pickup, it was known as the "Esquire", while the model with a double magnetic pickup was known as the "Telecaster".

In 1953 Fender introduced the mass-producible and world famous Stratocaster guitar. This guitar had several many unique elements, creative design features and improvements over the previous Telecaster model.

These mass-produced Gibson and Fender models are what took hold of a generation and caught on in popularity with many influential musicians of the time. These guitars changed the outlook, style and sound of music forever.

From humble beginnings, the electric guitar transformed an entire genre of art and was able to capture the emotions and feelings of entire generations of people.
